THE STUDIO THEATRE
(continued
from previous page)
Since
its founding in 1975, The Studio Theatre has garnered over 150 Helen Hayes
Award nominations for excellence. Located in the heart of downtown Washington,
D.C., the Studio has made live theatre of the highest professional level
accessible to the many communities of this richly diverse city.
As
part of its mission, the Studio serves the public through artistic, educational,
and community service programs, while promoting awareness of the role of
the arts in the quality of life and economic development. In addition to
producing the finest in contemporary theatre, the Studio nurtures emerging
artists through Secondstage, a creative home for daring and innovative
works, and trains over 500 actors annually in The Studio Theatre Acting
Conservatory.
"The
Studio Theatre is an ‘actor’s theatre," says Artistic Director Joy Zinoman.
"What could be more thrilling than to match great performers with the best
writing and produce it at the highest level in a space where no seat is
more than eight rows from the stage, where there isn’t a bad seat, where
the audience breathes with the actors on-stage?"
Strong
leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and two intimate, 200-seat theatres--the
state-of-art Mead and Milton-- have made The Studio |
Theatre
a national model for mid-size theatres. The Studio recently completed a
$7,600,000 building and stabilization campaign, culminating with the elimination
of its $1,000,000 mortgage.
With
a present operating budget of $2,500,000, The Studio Theatre continues
to move forward with work on a new 2000--2001 Season, which includes five
world-class plays by Tom Stoppard, August Willson, Marsha Norman, and more.
First, audiences will see Morris Panych’s Vigil, starring Washington
actor Floyd King. The season continues with Nilo Cruz’s Two Sisters
and a Piano, Norman’s Trudy Blue, Stoppard’s The Invention
of Love, and Wilson’s Jitney.
As
it continues to grow, The Studio Theatre is proud of its many partnerships
with regional and national corporations that have contributed to this growth.
